Top Ten Reads of 2018
Posted on January 2, 2019  in Book Reviews and Recommendations
Here are Pastor Caleb’s top ten reads of 2018:
  1. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: The First Forty Years 1899-1939 and D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: The Fight of Faith 1939-81 by Iain Murray.
This year I heard two men who I respect (Piper and Haykin) say that every Christian needs a dead mentor. A dead mentor is someone you can read, research, and learn from who has fought the good fight of the faith and finished well. ML-J is one of my dead mentors. His sermons, books, life and legacy inspire me to live the life of faith prayerfully, evangelistically, worshipfully, and biblically. If you want to read ML-J, start with his Studies in the Sermon on the Mount; you won’t regret it!

  1. Revelation: A Shorter Commentary by GK Beale and David Campbell
Weighing in at 529 pages, this volume is the ‘abridged’ version of GK Beale’s mammoth masterpiece on Revelation (1300 pages). The ‘Suggestions for Reflection’ sections, at the end of every textual unit, are worth the price of the book. As I read this commentary, there were many times that I was so stirred by the writing that I had to put it down and give praise to God. I will re-read this book in years to come.

  1. Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory: The Piety of Samuel and Sarah Pearce edited and introduced by Michael AG Haykin
Samuel Pearce was an English Baptist minister who lived for 33 years. Though his life was short, it is a wonderful testimony of devotion to God and authentic Christian piety. This small collection of his letters and writings inspires worship as one reads of Pearce’s earnestness for the salvation of the lost, joy in Christ, and proficiency in the Scriptures. Drink deeply from this well!

  1. Preaching and Preachers – Martyn Lloyd-Jones
A must-read for pastors. Every Christian should read the first chapter, “The Primacy of Preaching.”

  1. No Quick Fix – Andrew David Naselli
Higher Life Theology is prevalent in the thinking of many Christians today. Naselli tells us where it came from, what it is, and why it is harmful.

  1. Help for the New Pastor – Charles Malcolm Wingard
Wingard is the Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary. He has over three decades of pastoral experience. This volume provides new(ish) pastors with 18 insightful chapters on the ministry. A terrific primer!

  1. Abortion and the Early Church – Michael J. Gorman
The early church fathers are not silent on the issue of abortion. This book is a brief survey of the Church’s response to the problem of abortion in the first five centuries after Christ’s death. It details the pagan and Jewish views on abortion, and cites responses from various church fathers.

  1. Dominion and Dynasty – Stephen G. Dempster
This book is part of a terrific series called, New Studies in Biblical Theology. Dempster’s book shows us the structural unity of the Hebrew Bible. Ever wondered how the books in the Old Testament fit together? Stephen Dempster provides a marvellous summary.

  1. Conscience: What It Is, How to Train It, and Loving Those Who Differ by Andrew David Naselli and JD Crowley
The title of the book says it all. Short and helpful!

  1. Twelve Ways Your Phone Is Changing You – Tony Reinke
In an age of cell-phone abuse, addiction, and idolatry books like this are a needed exhortation. Reinke begins with a terrific theology of technology. Take up and read.
