ISLAM: Praying During Ramadan

Praying During Ramadan
Posted on July 9, 2013  in Blog, Islam, Missions, Prayer

Ramadan starts today.  You’ve probably heard the term.  Maybe you even know a little bit about it.  Maybe you have some Muslim friends or neighbours who have mentioned it.  In the event that you have no clue what Ramadan is all about, here’s a brief explanation, followed by a call to action.

What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, a 30 day period when Muslims fast from food, drink, and pleasure from dawn until dusk.  The time period coincides when the first verses of the Quran were supposedly given to the prophet Muhammed.  The purpose of this fasting is to focus the mind on spiritual things.  Charity also features importantly during Ramadan as the rewards are considered greater when giving during this time of the year than others.  The end of the 30 day period is celebrated by Eid ul Fitr when the new moon is seen in the sky.

How to pray during Ramadan
For the last 20 years, 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World has produced a booklet focusing on different Muslim countries around the world to help Christians know how to start praying for their Muslim friends, neighbours, or co-workers.  You’ll learn a lot just by reading through the book and also be encouraged to commit to praying and evangelizing during Ramadan (and beyond).  Copies of the book are available at the church, or you can get them through this site.  You should be able to download a pdf copy.
